Shoyou Sushi (1504 Light Street)

I use quite a few different resources when looking into my next restaurant to review. The Internet, Food Network, social media and The Sun are my go-to’s. Every so often I’ll get a recommendation that I have to go to a particular restaurant. Even more rare is when I receive multiple recommendations from different people for one specific spot. When that happens, I have no other option but to check it out.

This was exactly the case with my newest GoodEats venture. I was recommended by two of my friends to go try Shoyou Sushi

in Federal Hill. If it weren’t for these recommendations I would have never discovered this hidden gem.

Situated right on Light Street, Shoyou Sushi is tiny, so keep an eye out for it. Once inside you realize how little the sushi house is with only four tables and a couple seats at the sushi bar.

The owner, Bruce Li, is half the reason my friends had recommended the restaurant. He has a personality as vibrant and interesting as the specialty sushi rolls he constructs. Native to South Korea, Li gained his sushi skills in the Asian nation.

The sushi is what brought us through the door and did not disappoint. I highly recommend picking one of the specialty rolls; they are all unique and perfectly balanced. I had to go with the Japanese Burrito, which is a wrapped up roll with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, crab and avocado, served with a spicy dipping sauce. This was unlike anything I have ever had before and trust me I’ve had my fare share of sushi.

The Shoyou Style Baked Lobster Roll was another interesting roll. Imagine a California Roll topped with baked lobster meat. The heavy hitter and personally recommended was The Oriole Park. The roll was quite the mouthful with crab, avocado, asparagus, cream cheese, spicy tuna and crunch unagi on top for texture.

Putting together some unique rolls, a unique owner and a funky little sushi restaurant equals some GoodEats in my book.

 

Next time you’re in Federal Hill, give Shoyou Sushi and Bruce Li a visit.

Spice & Dice (1220 E. Joppa Rd)

The next GoodEats spot is a restaurant I stumbled upon via the Zagat website. For all you who don’t know, Zagat is a rating system for restaurants in the Baltimore area and others, that highlights the best attributes. This restaurant I had the pleasure of indulging in scored exceptionally high in all areas (décor, food, service, etc.). So, without further adieu, the restaurant you all are hopefully as interested in as I was: Spice & Dice. This powerhouse is located in a strip mall right off of East Joppa Road.

The restaurant’s décor is just as playful and interesting as the food. Colorful tables and chairs fill the entirety of the dining room. Once seated, you’re greeted by a staff member as eager and excited for you to enjoy this cuisine as you are. A few recommendations and suggestions later, I felt like I had an understanding of the menu.

Spice & Dice prides itself on serving authentic and home cooked Thai meals from family recipes. I’m pleased to say I wasn’t disappointed.

For an appetizer, a friend and I chose to split the Chicken Satay: warm pieces of grilled chicken served on a skewer with a delightful peanut dipping sauce. The waitress also suggested the calamari and the lemongrass soup.

The hard part was choosing a main course from all of the selections. After another suggestion from my waitress, I went with the Cashew Chicken with Pineapple. Let me tell you, it was unbelievable. Think of a delicious lightly fried piece of chicken with a tangy sauce and chunks of pineapples, and cashews to round it out. Out of this world! My friend decided to go with the traditional Pad Thai, which are rice noodles fried in a wok with eggs, scallions, bean sprouts and topped with peanuts. The dish was a true taste of Thai food with a nice Spice & Dice twist.

The food and service were exceptional, and topping it all off was how reasonable the prices were for the huge portions. The main courses ranged from $11 to $18 depending on your choice of meat.

I would go out of my way to enjoy this restaurant. Lucky enough for all of my friends here at Towson University, it is just a short five-minute drive from the campus. Please enjoy everyone!

Umi Sake (9726 York Road)

So hopefully you all went out and tried my first recommendation, Mari Luna’s.  If Mexican food isn’t your thing or you are looking for something a little closer, I have the solution for you – Umi Sake.  Located off of York Road right past Padonia Road, it’s hard to miss the bright white sign.  It’s set up just like any other Japanese restaurant; a few tables and an open sushi bar located in the front.

The kicker? The food is the real deal.  Let’s start off with the sushi. They have all of your basic rolls (California, Spicy Tuna, Philadelphia, etc.) but what makes Umi Sake different is their specialty rolls. They have everything from a Umi Sake Roll (shrimp tempura roll topped with crab dip), to the Pretty in Pink Roll (crab meat, shrimp, and cucumber all topped with tuna and avocado and finished with a citrus sauce), to one of my favorites the Scallop Dynamite Roll (tempura cream cheese roll topped with spicy scallops and tempura flakes) which is unbelievable if I must say so.  Not to mention the countless other cleverly named rolls including several Baltimore related names.  And I must say, every roll is absolutely beautiful.  Trust me on this one guys, you can Instagram them all. You can quote me on that!

Now if sushi doesn’t do it for you, you are in luck! Umi Sake puts out some of the best Chinese dishes I’ve had this side of the Atlantic.   Some of the dIshes include an atypical Crispy Sesame Chicken, a spicy take on Kung Pao Chicken, a Roasted Whole Duck, and my absolute favorite, the General Tao’s Chicken.

I hope you enjoy this hidden gem as it is one of mine and my families favorites.
